CHAPTER FOUR
Damon lived just around the corner, on the second floor above a convenience store.
“It’s no more than a fifteen minute walk,” he said, assuring Shawn as they stepped outside. “I promise. I wouldn’t go out to the bar unless it was.”
“I hear that.” Shawn wobbled a bit as he walked, but his cane steadied him. This was probably the first time he had gotten even a little tipsy since landing in Maine again. His sister didn’t like to keep alcohol in the house, since her first boyfriend had been an alcoholic. It probably wasn’t good to have it around for him, anyway. He had already heard lots of stories about drunk or pill-popping vets. He should at least try to keep temptation at bay.
Damon seemed to sense Shawn’s train of thought. “I go to the bar a lot, but you’d be surprised—it’s actually a nice atmosphere if you stay sober. The food’s not too bad, either.”
“Really?” Shawn smiled. “Somehow I find that hard to believe.”
Damon chuckled. They approached the neon sign of the 7/11, then Damon held open the door for Shawn.
“So do you work?” Shawn asked once they were inside the small corridor. After the words came out of his mouth, he wished he could take them back. He watched as Damon’s face fell, just a little, and then he made a fifty-fifty gesture with his hand.
“Sometimes. I can do a lot of IT work over the phone, which is what I was mostly trained in before I left. It’s not too bad—and really, the industry is going to get bigger. Talking to people about their website designs isn’t too hard, even if I don’t exactly know what a customer wants when they say their site needs a little more of the ol’ razzle dazzle.”
Shawn laughed. He still hadn’t found a job yet, but since he had moved in with his sister and her fiancé, who both had steady incomes, he wasn’t too worried. They would eventually need the guest room he was staying in for the baby, but that was seven months away. Hopefully, Shawn could find something in that time which could accommodate his leg issues. There were also some checks coming from the army and government to make the change easier, but like the hospital’s waiting list, Shawn wasn’t holding his breath.
When Damon didn’t ask about Shawn’s job, he took it as a gesture of kindness more than anything else. Damon took a step forward towards a set of stairs. Shawn squeezed his cane reflexively, his eyebrows furrowed.
“Do you have…?”
“An elevator. Right.” Damon turned around, holding more doors until they reached a rickety freight elevator. “It’s not that pleasant, and most people think it looks dangerous so I don’t take them in there. I’m only on the second floor, so it’s not that bad of a walk. But hey, I’m sure you and I have seen more dangerous things.”
Shawn smirked. When he did, Damon’s eyes lit up again. Shawn could feel Damon’s nerves interacting with his own and expounding them.
